Actor Michael Shannon has taken an unconventional path in the music world, performing R.E.M. albums on tour while maintaining a skeptical view of actors pursuing music careers.

The Oscar-nominated actor, who recently performed R.E.M.'s "Driver 8" on The Tonight Show, expressed mixed feelings about actors transitioning into music. "I kind of walked away from [songwriting]. Because, if nothing else, it just seems kind of greedy," Shannon told The Bitter Southerner. "I'm not a fan of actors having rock and roll bands."

Despite his reservations, Shannon has embraced performing R.E.M.'s music alongside musician Jason Narducy, describing their shows as "glorified karaoke." He views karaoke as both "embarrassing" and "extraordinarily beautiful," appreciating how it allows anyone to perform songs they love with genuine passion.

The duo's journey began in July 2023 when they celebrated R.E.M.'s debut album "Murmur's" 40th anniversary in Chicago, joined by R.E.M.'s bassist Mike Mills. Following that success, they embarked on a tour performing "Fables of the Reconstruction" across North America, with UK dates planned for August.

Shannon maintains a humble approach to his performances, stating, "I'm not attempting to be Michael Stipe. I'm just singing a song that I love to the best of my capabilities." His connection to R.E.M.'s music deepened after meeting frontman Michael Stipe in Athens, Georgia, where they toured significant locations in the band's history.

The project has garnered support from both fans and R.E.M. members, with the band attending Shannon's Athens performance. While R.E.M. has maintained their stance against reuniting since their 2011 breakup, Shannon and Narducy continue celebrating their legacy through these tribute performances.
