In a stunning announcement, Atlanta-based metal band Mastodon revealed that guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds has departed the group after 25 years. The news marks the first lineup change in the band's history since their formation.

The band shared the news through their social media channels, stating they had "mutually decided to part ways" with Hinds. Mastodon expressed gratitude for their shared musical journey while affirming that their scheduled 2025 tour dates will proceed as planned.

Hinds' absence was first noted during the band's recent appearance at New York's Metropolitan Opera House, where remaining members Bill Kelliher, Troy Sanders, and Brann Dailor participated in a discussion about their album "Leviathan" and its connection to Moby-Dick.

The departure comes as a surprise to many fans, though some point to Hinds' previous public statements expressing his disinterest in heavy metal and desire for the band to move away from the genre. His distinctive guitar work and vocal style have been central to Mastodon's sound throughout their career.

The band has yet to announce a replacement guitarist for their upcoming tours, which include U.S. dates with Coheed and Cambria in May and June, followed by an appearance at the UK's Bloodstock festival in August.

While Hinds has not released a personal statement regarding his exit, Mastodon expressed well wishes for his future endeavors as they prepare to enter their next chapter.
