Music icon Sir Elton John made a poignant revelation about his deteriorating eyesight during Sunday's charity gala premiere of "The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical" at London's Dominion Theatre.
The 77-year-old composer, who wrote the score for the musical, disclosed to the audience that he has lost his vision. "I haven't been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed listening to it," John shared during his emotional address.
The "Rocket Man" singer's eyesight problems began this past summer in France when he developed a severe infection in his right eye. The condition has progressively worsened, affecting his ability to read, watch performances, or engage in his musical work.
During the premiere, John was accompanied by his husband David Furnish, whom he praised as his "rock" through this challenging period. Furnish assisted the musician both on and off stage during the event.
The vision impairment has particularly impacted John's professional life. In a recent interview with ABC News, he expressed uncertainty about his ability to record new music, noting that he "can't see a lyric" to begin with.
Despite these challenges, John maintained his characteristic optimism at the premiere, expressing his appreciation for the musical's sound. The charity event, which supported the Elton John AIDS Foundation, drew numerous celebrities including Lily Collins, Elizabeth Hurley, and Anna Wintour.
While medical professionals have suggested there may be hope for improvement, John acknowledged he currently faces limitations in his daily activities. The musician, who has faced various health challenges throughout his career, continues to adapt to this new reality while maintaining his connection to music through listening.
