Rock guitar legend Tom Morello recently shared insights about teaching his son Roman to play guitar during the pandemic and reflected on his own approach to tone and gear over the decades.
The Rage Against the Machine guitarist revealed that his son Roman quickly progressed from beginner to tackling complex solos and writing original material. The father-son duo even collaborated on music together, including a track called "Soldier in the Army of Love."
"Watching Roman's journey with guitar during lockdown was incredible," Morello said. "He went from picking up the instrument to writing his own music in a remarkably short time."
In discussing his own musical evolution, Morello described how he stopped chasing the perfect tone back in 1988. He's maintained the exact same amp settings for both recording and live performances ever since.
"I realized that obsessing over tone was holding me back," Morello explained. "Once I found settings that worked, I stuck with them and focused on the music itself."
The guitarist also announced he's working on his first true solo rock album, set for release in 2025. The upcoming record will feature several collaborations, including contributions from Roman.
Beyond family collaborations, Morello touched on unreleased projects, including a track with Post Malone and some unheard Audioslave recordings that he hopes will see the light of day. He drew parallels between Post Malone's melodic sensibilities and those of his late Audioslave bandmate Chris Cornell.
The interview wrapped up with Morello discussing his advocacy work for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, including his successful campaign for Randy Rhoads' induction and current efforts to get Iron Maiden recognized.
