Iron Maiden has named Simon Dawson as their new touring drummer, following Nicko McBrain's retirement announcement after 42 years with the legendary heavy metal band.
Dawson, a former session musician from Suffolk, England, brings extensive experience as Steve Harris's rhythm section partner in British Lion over the past 12 years. He has recorded multiple albums with British Lion and toured globally with the group across the US, UK, Europe, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Mexico and South America.
The announcement comes just after McBrain's final performance with Iron Maiden in São Paulo, Brazil on December 7, 2024. McBrain, 72, decided to step back from touring following health challenges, including a stroke in January 2023 that impacted his playing abilities.
While retiring from live performances, McBrain will remain connected to Iron Maiden through various projects. In his farewell statement, he expressed gratitude for his time with the band, saying "Touring with Maiden the last 42 years has been an incredible journey!"
Iron Maiden shows no signs of slowing down as they prepare for their 50th Anniversary celebration. The band will launch "The Run For Your Lives Tour" on May 27, 2025, starting in Budapest. The tour will feature material from the band's 1980 debut through their 1992 album "Fear Of The Dark."
