In a surprise move that sent waves through the music industry, Kendrick Lamar released his sixth studio album 'GNX' on Friday at noon Eastern Time, marking his first full-length project since 2022's "Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers."
The 12-track album, which arrived without any prior announcement or promotional campaign, features collaborations with mariachi singer Deyra Barrera, SZA and Dody6. The production credits include industry heavyweights Jack Antonoff, Sounwave, and Kamasi Washington.
The unexpected release caps off an exceptional year for the rapper. His track "Not Like Us," a response in his highly publicized rivalry with Drake, achieved remarkable success by reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 twice - first upon its release and again when the music video debuted in July.
In June, Lamar hosted "The Pop Up - Ken & Friends" at the Los Angeles Forum, a star-studded concert featuring appearances from West Coast rap icons including Roddy Ricch and Tyler, The Creator. The event was streamed live through Amazon Music.
Adding to his achievements, Lamar is set to headline the Super Bowl halftime show next year. "Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I'll be there to remind the world why," the artist declared in his announcement.
'GNX' marks Lamar's first release since departing from Top Dawg Entertainment, his longtime label home. The album is released under his own imprint, pgLang, in partnership with Interscope Records.
The release arrives as Lamar enjoys multiple Grammy nominations, including nods for song and record of the year, positioning him as one of hip-hop's most decorated artists of 2024.
