Legendary indie rock band Pavement is set to release their first new song since 1999 as part of the soundtrack for their upcoming documentary film "Pavements."
The California-based group, known for influential albums like "Slanted and Enchanted" and "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain," will include the yet-unnamed track in director Alex Ross Perry's experimental documentary scheduled for wider release in 2025.
Scott 'Spiral Stairs' Kannberg, the band's guitarist, recently revealed on the Kreative Kontrol podcast that the new song emerged during rehearsals for their 2022 reunion tour. "I just heard a mix of it today, and it's pretty good," Kannberg shared. "It's something different and it's a song that we all kind of loved playing."
The film "Pavements" blends multiple formats, including scripted scenes, documentary footage, and musical elements. It chronicles the band's preparation for their sold-out 2022 reunion tour while simultaneously following the development of a musical based on their songs and a museum dedicated to their history.
The movie premiered at the Venice International Film Festival in September, with the band's final performance taking place in October at the New York premiere. During that show, percussionist Bob Nastanovich told the audience it would be their "last show for a long time."
Pavement's last original material came with the Major Leagues EP in October 1999, shortly before their initial split. While the band reunited for tours in 2010 and 2022, this upcoming track marks their first new recording in a quarter century.
The release date for the film's wider distribution and accompanying soundtrack remains unannounced.
